AUL Offers Analysis of Newly Released data from the Guttmacher Institute

WASHINGTON, D.C. (1-11-11) – Looking at the latest abortion data available, AUL President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest said “We’re not surprised to see the stalled decline in abortions. Planned Parenthood has an aggressively pro-abortion business model, marketing chemical abortions and opening ‘mega clinics’ in low-income communities. That’s a deadly one-two punch.” Yoest made her comments after reviewing the newly released report from the Guttmacher Institute that discussed the most recent abortion data.

In recent years, the rate and number of abortions has been in decline. But the Guttmacher Institute reported this week that the decline has “stalled.”

Yoest made the following observations: “By pushing physicians and facilities to prescribe pills to accomplish abortions without a doctor’s visit, Planned Parenthood is pushing the limit of the law and common sense to increase the numbers of abortion.

“First and foremost, to see a change in the rate of abortion AUL calls on the newly elected Congress to defund Planned Parenthood. But more can be done.

“AUL’s catalogue of pro-life model legislation has seen significantly increasing demand. Legislation which would require a doctor’s examination before handing out abortion-causing medication is a cutting-edge trend among pro-life legislators looking for popular ways to curtail dangerous, unsupervised abortions.”

Even Guttmacher admits that looking only at the relatively small change in national numbers “masks substantial changes in some states.” Yoest added that this data underscores the need for, and the efficacy of, the model pro-life legislation included in AUL’s annual Defending Life resource for legislators.
