The thought of enduring congressional discussions on C-SPAN might induce drowsiness in many people. Not Dan McConchie. As Vice President of Government Affairs at Americans United for Life, he is a passionate participant in America’s legislative process, engaging in public-policy efforts with enthusiasm and conviction.

McConchie’s interest in the business of lawmaking was sparked during an internship in Washington, D.C., during his college years, when he began searching for the right cause to champion. “I wanted my hard work to mean something, to create a lasting change,” he recalls. “What could be more lasting than the preservation of human life?”

With this career destination in mind, he directed his energies toward equipping himself to advocate intelligently and effectively for pro-life causes. In 1998, he earned an M.A. in Bioethics from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois, graduating Magna Cum Laude and receiving the additional honors of the university’s Professor C. B. Bjuge Award and its J. C. Olson Memorial Award. His undergraduate degree is in Biblical Studies with a minor in Philosophy at Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. He also attended the Fund for American Studies’ Institute on Political Journalism at Georgetown University in 1993, interning with The Center for the Study of Popular Culture, and attended the Fund’s American Institute on Political and Economic Systems at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1995.

As a bioethics expert, McConchie is frequently quoted in the national news media. Media outlets that have featured him include MSNBC, FOX News, PBS, NPR, BBC, the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, San Francisco Chronicle, and Christianity Today.

Before coming to AUL in 2004, McConchie was director of public relations and public policy at The Center for Bioethics and Human Dignity, overseeing the Center’s media and public-policy projects. For nine years, he served in the infantry and military police of the Army National Guard. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois.
